Longen-ji Temple, located in Akita Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity of fertility and prosperity, named Ōkuninushi. Built during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), the temple showcases traditional Japanese architectural style with a wooden main hall and a stone fence. The shrine's beautiful garden, featuring various types of trees and flowers, is especially famous for its weeping cherry blossoms.

Visitor tip
Visitors can take a peaceful stroll through the gardens during the cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and try some traditional Japanese tea at the on-site teahouse.
Cultural notes
Longen-ji Temple is famous for its association with the legend of Ōkuninushi, who was said to have possessed the power to bring fertility to crops. During the spring equinox festival, visitors can perform a ritual purification ceremony to pray for good fortune and health.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1858.
