伊勢山神社

Located in the heart of Tokyo, Ise-Sha Shrine is not actually located in Tokyo but in Mie Prefecture, however a small branch exists in Tokyo. Dedicated to the Sun Goddess Amaterasu, this Shinto shrine is an important cultural and historical site. The main branch is dedicated to Amaterasu, while a smaller branch in Tokyo is dedicated to Susanoo, her brother.

Visitor tip

Due to its small size, visitors can quickly pray at the shrine and then take a short subway ride to nearby Tokyo Tower for panoramic views of the city.

Cultural notes

As the only Shinto shrine located outside of Mie Prefecture that was granted special permission to display the Imperial Regalia, this shrine is an important cultural site. The shrine's architecture is inspired by traditional Japanese Shinden-zukuri style.

Established during the Edo period as a branch of Ise Grand Shrine in Mie Prefecture.
