Big Smile God Shrine, located in the town of Kasaoka in Shimane Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of longevity and good luck. According to local legend, the shrine was built by the famous monk and poet, Saigō Kajikawa, who lived during the Edo period. The shrine's main hall features a distinctive red tile roof, which is said to symbolize the color of good fortune.

Visitor tip
To make a wish for longevity and good luck, tie a ribbon with your name and address on it to the shrine's main column. The ribbon is then cut by a shrine staff member at midnight during the 'Tsutsugatsu' festival in December.

The shrine is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage and is often visited by locals seeking good luck before New Year's (Oshogatsu). In addition, the shrine hosts the annual 'Matsuri' festival in May to celebrate the god of longevity and prosperity.

The shrine was rebuilt in 1681 after being destroyed by a flood.
