The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Japanese design with a distinctive 'floating' effect, achieved through the use of wooden pillars and ornate decorations. As one of Japan's 'yūjin-ji,' shrines that honor deities from mythology, this site draws inspiration from regional folklore and the worship of water spirits.

Cultural notes

This shrine honors the water god Ryūjin, as well as local kami associated with the sea and its creatures. The Tokushima region has a rich tradition of honoring aquatic spirits through rituals and offerings. During the annual 'Umi Matsuri,' visitors honor these deities by releasing lanterns onto the waters.

Historical note

The shrine was originally constructed in 1719 during the Edo period, but its exact location is unclear due to flooding. It has been rebuilt multiple times, with the current structure dating back to the early 20th century.
