Located in the city of Kakunodate, Gunma Prefecture, Eight Hells Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity Inari Okami, god of rice, fertility, and prosperity. The shrine is famous for its unique architecture, with over 1,000 vermilion torii gates that form a tunnel leading up to the main hall. The shrine's design is said to resemble a mountain pass, symbolizing the connection between heaven and earth. Visitors can walk through the gates and make offerings at the altar, seeking blessings for good harvests and prosperity.

To avoid long lines, visit the shrine early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Cultural notes
Inari Okami is often depicted with multiple fox spirits, known as kitsune, which are believed to bring good luck and prosperity. During the annual Omono Sai Festival, visitors can dress up as Inari and kitsune for a festive photo opportunity.
Historical note
The current shrine was rebuilt in 1869 after being damaged during the Boshin War.
