Located in the city of Omi, Shiga Prefecture, Dayotsu Grand Shrine is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and the god Susanoo. The shrine's name 'Dayotsu' refers to a nearby mountain and has a historical background dating back to the 6th century. Its current structure dates from the Edo period. As one of Japan's oldest shrines, Dayotsu Grand Shrine embodies traditional Shinto architecture with a distinctive West Hall and a large torii gate.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Dayotsu Grand Shrine is associated with the mythology of Susanoo, who was said to have struck the sea with his magical club. The shrine also participates in the annual 'Susanoo Festival' in July, celebrating the god's power and generosity. Interestingly, the shrine's West Hall features a unique wooden structure known as 'tsukubai,' used for purification rituals.
Historical note
The shrine was built during the Asuka period in the early 6th century, however its current form was developed in the Edo period (1603-1868).
