Located in the town of Kosaka, Niigata Prefecture, Hayaoshi Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to various kami. The shrine's main hall features a unique 'dango' roof, which is said to resemble a dango ball. According to local legend, the shrine was built in 1614 during the Edo period to enshrine a sacred cedar tree that was brought back from the island of Hokkaido.

Visitor tip
To avoid the heat, it is best to visit the shrine during early morning or late afternoon when the sun is not too strong.
Cultural notes
Hayaoshi Shrine is associated with the local legend of 'Yurei-kosaka', a vengeful spirit said to haunt the area. Visitors can also experience traditional Japanese tea and sweets at the shrine's teahouse.

The shrine was rebuilt after the Great Niigata Earthquake of 1994.
