Visitor tip

Visit Shinzan Shrine at sunset to witness a serene atmosphere, and try to catch a glimpse of the shrine's famous lanterns which are lit every evening during peak season.

Cultural notes

The shrine is closely associated with the legend of Tsukuyomi's son, Ninigi-no-Mikoto, who was said to have brought rice cultivation from the land of the gods. During the spring festival, visitors can participate in a ritual dance called 'Kawabi-dori' which reenacts this mythological event.

Historical note

Established during the Muromachi period (1336-1573 CE), Shinzan Shrine was rebuilt after being damaged by earthquakes in the 16th century.
