Cultural notes

Suitengu shrines are especially popular among expectant mothers and families with young children. The water deity worship reflects both Shinto reverence for natural elements and the tragic historical memory of the Heike clan's fate at sea.

Historical note

Suitengu shrines originated from the worship of Emperor Antoku and other Heike clan members who perished in the Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185. The cult of Suitengu developed during the medieval period as these tragic imperial figures were deified and associated with water deities and protection of children.
