厳島神社

厳島神社 is a Shinto shrine located on the island of Iwoto in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. Dedicated to the sea god Susanoo-no-Mikoto and his wife Amaterasu-no-Mikoto's brother, Narukami-no-Kami, this shrine is famous for its unique architecture and its role in Japanese folklore. The shrine's architecture reflects its coastal location with a complex of three main shrines: Susanoo no Mikan, Susanoo no Shinmei, and Narukami no Tsurugi. The annual Mabushi Festival, held on July 6th, is a significant event where visitors can participate in traditional dances and purification rituals.

Cultural notes

Historical note

The shrine was originally built during the Heian period (794-1185) as Susanoo no Mikan, but its current form was established during the Edo period (1603-1868).
