Autumn Leaf Shrine, located in the town of Matsue in Shimane Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of rice and fertility, Inari. The shrine's main hall was built in 1712 during the Edo period, featuring a traditional Japanese-style architecture with a large torii gate. Visitors can walk through the peaceful grounds, lined with beautiful autumn leaves in the fall season.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its annual Autumn Leaf Festival (, Akizuki Matsuri), which celebrates the changing of the leaves with music, dance, and traditional games. The festival's main event is the leaf-throwing ceremony, where participants throw artificial leaves to symbolize the cycle of life.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by fires in 1651 and 1859.
