Visitor tip
To avoid crowds, visit Shinmei-ja early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is not too high.
Cultural notes
Shinmei-ja is famous for its unique architectural style known as 'Kami-yagura,' which features a five-story pagoda dedicated to the kami (deity) of wisdom, literature and education. The shrine is also associated with the legend of the great hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who is said to have visited the shrine during his travels.
Historical note
Founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE), Shinmei-ja was once the main shrine of the Yamato Dynasty.
