Located in Kyoto, the Daiojinsha Shrine is dedicated to the Sun Goddess Amaterasu and her consort, Susanoo. The shrine's name 'Daiojinsha' roughly translates to 'Great Lord of the Sun', reflecting its connection to the Shinto solar deity. As one of the oldest shrines in Japan, it has a rich history dating back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE).

Cultural notes

This shrine is connected to the myth of Amaterasu, who was said to have hidden in a cave during a quarrel with her brother Susanoo. To appease her and bring back the light, Susanoo purified himself by bathing in the nearby Katsura River and offered gifts to Amaterasu at this very shrine.

Historical note

The shrine was first established during the Nara period and rebuilt during the Kamakura era.
