伊勢宮

Shimane

伊勢宮 Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary located in the city of Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. Dedicated to the deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto, it is one of Japan's most revered shrines and has been continuously worshipped since its establishment during the Nara period (710-794 CE). The shrine complex boasts an impressive wooden torii gate, a sacred symbol of Shintoism, and features a unique 'tsutsumi' architectural style which blends with the natural landscape.

Visitor tip

When visiting the shrine, make sure to purchase a sacred rice ball (senbei) from one of the vendors and offer it as an omiyaedori offering at the torii gate before entering the main sanctuary.

Cultural notes

The shrine is famously linked with the legend of Susanoo-no-Mikoto's battle against his brother, Amaterasu-o-mi-kami. This mythological connection has been commemorated through numerous festivals and rituals throughout the year.
