Located in the city of Matsue, Shimojo District, Shimane Prefecture, is the famous Okunoshima Shrine dedicated to Okuninushi, a kami associated with fertility and prosperity, as well as other deities including Kukiyomi-no-kami and Inasashimizu Okami. The shrine's name 'Okunoshima' translates to 'island of the eight thousand things'.

Cultural notes
This shrine is famous for its beautiful architecture and historic significance. In Japan's mythology, Okuninushi is said to have been the god who brought back his sister with whom he was separated in heaven to earth. The shrine also hosts a special festival called 'Gion Matsuri' every five years.
