Shimane

Located in the heart of Matsue City, Shizuka Taisha, or more commonly known as, Hie Shrine's Shimanami-cho branch, is an important Shinto shrine dedicated to Okuninushi (also known as Kamikatsuhiko), a kami associated with agriculture, prosperity, and good fortune. The shrine's architecture reflects the traditional Japanese style of yabutsu-tsu-zukuri, featuring a five-story pagoda and a large torii gate.

Visitor tip

For a unique experience, try participating in one of the shrine's traditional festivals by buying a special sake called 'sake-mai' during a festival day.

Cultural notes

Okuninushi is also associated with the mythological story of Urashima Taro, who was sent to the underwater palace of Ryujin and became immortal. The shrine celebrates this legend through various festivals and ceremonies throughout the year.

Historical note

The current main hall was rebuilt in 1671 during the Edo period.
