岡郷穀神社

Shimane

Located in the town of Minami-osa, Shishimaya-cho, Shimane Prefecture, Okanoshima Gushiinsha is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the rice god kami. The shrine's architecture reflects its regional style, with a curved roof and ornate wooden decorations. It is believed to have been established during the Heian period (794-1185 CE).

Cultural notes

As a kami enshrined deity for agriculture and fertility, Okanoshima Gushiinsha is often visited during the autumnal harvest season to ensure a bountiful crop. The shrine also hosts a local festival in November to celebrate the god's role in rice production.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE) after being damaged by an earthquake.
