Shimane

Ishitsukayama Tamagawashiro Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari, the god of rice, fertility, and prosperity. Located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, it is one of the most important shrines on the coast of Japan. The shrine complex features traditional Japanese architecture, including a five-story pagoda and several wooden buildings. Visitors can experience traditional Shinto rituals and ceremonies, such as the purification ritual for the New Year (Oshogatsu) and the Star Festival (Tanabata).

Visitor tip

Founded in the 7th century, it was a major stop on the Saikai Route, an important trade route that connected the region to other parts of Japan.
