Located in the town of Hamai, Shimane Prefecture, Daisha-gu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the sea god Susanoo-no-mikoto and the sun goddess Amaterasu. The shrine is famous for its stunning vermilion torii gate and its role as the supposed ancestral home of the Matsudaira clan, who were known as the 'Hakamada no tengu', or 'clouds of Hakamada'.

Visitor tip
Visitors can wash their hands at the shrine's stone basin before making an offering to honor Susanoo-no-mikoto, believed to be able to purify the body and mind.
Cultural notes
Daisha-gu Shrine is also known for its association with the 'Hakamada no tengu', mythical creatures said to inhabit the forested hills surrounding the shrine. During the annual Hakamada Festival in November, locals dress up as these creatures to reenact their legendary battles.
