真幡神社

Shimane

Located in the town of Matsue in Shimane Prefecture, Matsue-jinja Shrine is one of Japan's oldest and most historic shrines, with a history dating back to 757 AD. Dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, the shrine is also known for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture. Visitors can explore the main hall, dedicated to the shrine's primary deity, as well as various smaller shrines and temples.

Cultural notes

Matsue-jinja Shrine is also famous for its connection to the legendary Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a samurai and brother of Emperor Go-Toba. According to legend, Yoshitsune hid in the shrine's forest before being betrayed by his own brother, fleeing on a wooden boat.

The shrine was originally built in 757 AD during the Asuka period.
