諏訪神社

Gunma

Located in the heart of Gunma Prefecture,諏訪神社 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the water deity, Fujin, and the rice goddess, Inazuma. The shrine is situated near the town of Takasaki and is said to be one of the oldest shrines in the region, with records dating back to the Heian period (794-1185). It is also known for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture.

Visitor tip

To make a prayer at the shrine's torii gate, be sure to bring an ema, a small wooden or paper prayer card with your name and intention written on it.

Cultural notes

諏訪神社 is famous for its association with Fujin, the god of wind and water. According to legend, Fujin was said to have created the nearby river by striking his sake cup against a rock. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in May to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in the 7th century during the Asuka period, but its current form dates back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
