Ishikawa

Located in the city of Kanazawa, Gunbo Jinja Shrine is dedicated to the deified spirits of the Nakamura and Matsudaira clans. The shrine's architecture reflects its Edo period roots, with a traditional style featuring a main hall, a vermillion torii gate, and a beautiful garden. Visitors can enjoy various festivals throughout the year, including the spring 'Nakamura matsuri', which celebrates the arrival of spring and features traditional performances.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Gunbo Jinja Shrine is associated with the mythological figure of Hachiman Okami, a kami revered for his protection and patronage. The shrine also features a unique tradition of 'yukucho' - lanterns that are hung on the main hall's gate to welcome spirits during the Nakamura matsuri festival.

Historical note

The shrine was built in 1629 during the Edo period as a branch shrine of Hachiman Shrine in Kumamoto.
