鷲神社

Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu, previously known as 鷲神社, is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture. Dedicated to the god Hachiman Okami, a kami often associated with military victories and protection, this shrine has a rich history dating back to the 8th century. The shrine complex features traditional Japanese architecture with a large torii gate and several smaller shrines dedicated to other regional deities.

Cultural notes

Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu is believed to be connected to the legend of Sanemori-no-oki, a legendary samurai who sought protection from the god Hachiman before the Battle of Dan no Ura. The shrine also hosts an annual Hachiman Festival (Hachiman Matsuri) in April, featuring traditional dances and rituals.

Historical note

The shrine was established during the Nara period (710-794 CE), making it one of the oldest Hachiman Shrines in Japan.
