Shimane

Located in the city of Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, Tenmangu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning and culture. The shrine is famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture, which reflect the Heian period (794-1185 CE). According to legend, Michizane was a high-ranking official who died on his way back from a military campaign in 941 CE.
