諏訪神社

Gifu

Temple of Inari, dedicated to the Shinto deity Inari Okami, patron of agriculture and fertility, is located in the heart of Takayama city, Gifu Prefecture. The shrine complex features a large torii gate and numerous vermilion torii gates, known as 'fushimi-inari', which symbolize the connection between heaven and earth. Visitors can walk through the tunnel of thousands of torii gates and pray for good fortune and prosperity.

Visit at dawn or dusk to avoid crowds and make your way through the tunnel of torii gates without being obstructed.

Cultural notes

Inari Okami is also revered as a kami of education and learning. The shrine hosts an annual festival, Inari Matsuri, in May, which features traditional music, dance, and offerings to the deity.

Historical note

Founded in 718 CE by Emperor Shōmu, the shrine was rebuilt during the Edo period in 1681.
