Located in Hyogo Prefecture, the Bun'yōji Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of war and military strategy, Saigō Takamori's ancestral deity, and the god of fertility and prosperity, Ōkuninushi. The shrine was originally built during the Edo period as a shrine for Ōkuninushi. In 1898, it was re-dedicated to Saigō Takamori's deity after his death. Today, visitors can see traditional architecture, including the torii gate and main hall, which is adorned with intricate wooden carvings. The shrine also offers stunning views of Osaka Bay.

Visitor tip

To avoid crowds, visit the shrine early in the morning or late in the afternoon to take in the serene atmosphere and beautiful views of Osaka Bay.

Cultural notes

Bun'yōji Shrine is famous for its unique festival, the 'Festival of the Red Robe', which commemorates Saigō Takamori's life. During the festival, a replica of Saigō Takamori's red robe is carried through the streets by participants.

The shrine was originally built in 1692 during the Edo period as a shrine for Ōkuninushi.
