Fukuyama Shrine in Okayama Prefecture is dedicated to the Shinto god of learning and wisdom, Fukuyama-no-kami, as well as other kami including the god of fertility, Shitennō-ji, and the god of agriculture, Inari. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Japanese style with a vermilion torii gate and wooden structures. Visitors can explore the shrine grounds, which include a museum and a beautiful garden. The shrine is particularly famous for its unique 'hanging garden' located on the mountain slope above the main hall.

Cultural notes

Fukuyama Shrine is famous for its association with the legend of 'The Story of Murasaki Shikibu', where the legendary author Murasaki Shikibu is said to have taken refuge at the shrine. The shrine also hosts an annual 'Murasaki Festival' in August, celebrating the life and works of the famous author.

Historical note

The shrine was founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE), making it one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
