下妻神社

Ibaraki

下妻神社 is a Shinto shrine located in Ibaraki Prefecture, dedicated to the worship of the kami Torikawa Hachiman and also enshrines Torii, Takahisa, Toritake and Naminowa. The shrine is famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture. The shrine was originally founded during the Heian period (794-1185) but has undergone several renovations over the centuries.

Cultural notes

As with many Shinto shrines, rituals and ceremonies are performed throughout the year to ensure a good harvest and protect against evil spirits. The shrine is also known for its unique 'tsukubai' water basin, where visitors can purify themselves before approaching the main shrine.

Historical note

The shrine's original name was '下妻神明宮' and was built in the Heian period.
