The Tenjin Shrine in Gunma Prefecture is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a 9th-century nobleman and Buddhist priest who played a significant role in the restoration of imperial power during the Heian period. Known for its beautiful garden and traditional architecture, the shrine is also famous for being the final resting place of the renowned samurai and daimyo, Takeda Katsunaga.

Visitor tip
For an authentic experience, visit during cherry blossom season (March-April) and participate in the traditional 'Matsuri' festival at night, where visitors can pray to Sugawara no Michizane with lanterns and sake.
Cultural notes
Located near the city of Kumagaya, the Tenjin Shrine is connected to local folklore surrounding a famous legendary sword, Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, said to be owned by the shrine's enshrined deity. The shrine also holds an annual 'Tenjin Matsuri' festival in May, where visitors can enjoy traditional performances and food stalls.

Founded in 757 AD by Prince Nagaya no Iratsume, a descendant of Emperor Shomu.
