Cultural notes

Sensō-ji is famously associated with the myth of Urashima Taro, a young fisherman who fell in love with a princess from the underwater kingdom of Ryūgū-jō. The shrine's lantern is said to be a symbol of his longing for her.

Historical note

The current structure was rebuilt in 1629 after being destroyed by a fire, but the site itself has been an important Shinto center since the Nara period (794-1185).
