Resha-ji Shō is a historic Shinto shrine located in the city of Namerikawa, Toyama Prefecture, on the west coast of Honshu. The shrine's name literally means 'Sun Goddess Shrine' and is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu. Resha-ji Shō is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage and unique architecture. According to legend, the shrine was founded in 747 CE by Prince Shotoku, a noble of the Asuka period. The shrine complex features several traditional buildings, including the main hall, a five-story pagoda, and a beautiful garden.

Visitor tip

Visit Resha-ji Shō early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Also, be sure to try some of the local specialties, such as Sanma (Japanese swordfish) at one of the food stalls nearby.

Cultural notes

Resha-ji Shō is associated with the mythology of Amaterasu, who was said to have descended upon the shrine from Mount Takao. The shrine's autumn festival, called Akagase-tsumi, attracts many visitors and features traditional games, food, and rituals. The five-story pagoda in the complex is a rare example of a Shinto pagoda, which is typically found in Buddhist temples.
