Cultural notes
Inari is known for his mischievous and cunning nature, often depicted as a fox deity. The shrine's famous vermilion torii gate, which spans over 500 meters, is said to be an example of Inari's power and abundance. During the autumn months, visitors can participate in the 'Torii Tree Festival' where hundreds of vermilion torii gates are erected along the shrine's grounds.
Historical note
Founded in 759 AD by Prince Nagaya no Okinaga, a descendant of Emperor Saga, the shrine has been an important pilgrimage site for over 1,200 years.
