Cultural notes
愛宕神社 is one of the many Shinto shrines in Japan that celebrate the summer solstice festival, known as Tanabata. During this festival, visitors can write wishes on tanzaku papers and tie them to the shrine's vermilion torii gate, which are then burned on a bonfire.
Historical note
The shrine was founded in 1613 by Hachibei Nakagawa, who served as the governor of Akita during the Edo period.
