Kumano Shrine, located in Niigata Prefecture, is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. Dedicated to the Kumano region's powerful kami, it has been an important spiritual center for centuries. Cultural notes
Kumano Shrine is closely tied to the mythology of the Kumano region. It is said that the shrine was built by the great Emperor Shotoku (c. 574-622 CE) who worshipped here during his lifetime, and is also associated with the legend of the Eight-Footed Dragon of Kumano.
Historical note
Founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE), Kumano Shrine has continued to be an important pilgrimage site ever since.
