Kumano Shrine is closely tied to the mythology of the Kumano region. It is said that the shrine was built by the great Emperor Shotoku (c. 574-622 CE) who worshipped here during his lifetime, and is also associated with the legend of the Eight-Footed Dragon of Kumano.
