池ノ丸神社跡

Tokushima

Poolo no Maru Jinja Saikyu is a historic Shinto shrine located in the city of Tokushima, Tokushima Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the god of the sea and fishing, Izanagi's grandson, Sanbo-sampopo, and his wife Yomotsu-hime. Although the original temple was destroyed during the Second World War, the current structure dates back to the 1920s. Visitors can still see remnants of the old shrine building, as well as a tranquil pond with a beautiful waterfall. The shrine is surrounded by a scenic forest and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Visitor tip

For a peaceful visit, try to arrive early in the morning or late in the evening when the sun is low. The tranquil atmosphere and stunning scenery are especially beautiful at these times.

Cultural notes

According to legend, Yomotsu-hime, the goddess of the sea, wept for her lover Sanbo-sampopo after his death. Her tears became the waves of the ocean. The shrine is believed to be a sacred site where fishermen and sailors can pray for safe voyages and bountiful catches.

Historical note

The original Poolo no Maru Jinja was built during the Edo period (1603-1867).
