Ishikawa

Indra Shrine in Ishikawa is dedicated to the Shinto god Inari Okami, known as the patron of rice and fertility. As one of Japan's oldest shrines, it was originally built by Emperor Jimmu in 712 AD, during the Yayoi period. The shrine complex features beautiful gardens and traditional wooden buildings. Visitors can walk through the tranquil grounds and explore the various halls dedicated to Inari Okami.

Visitor tip

To experience a traditional tea ceremony, visit during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and attend one of the many ceremonies held at the shrine.

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its numerous fox statues called kitsune, which are believed to be messengers of Inari Okami. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in September to celebrate the harvest season.
