Located in Shiga Prefecture, Eight Sacs Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of the eight saccu, or 'eight sacc' rice paddies that once grew in the area. The shrine is associated with the legend of Ryoma Sakamoto, who was said to have visited the shrine before his assassination.

Cultural notes
As an important site for local agriculture, the shrine is also associated with fertility and prosperity. The eight saccu that the shrine is named after are said to have represented different aspects of Japanese society during the Edo period.
