Ishikawa

Eight-Horned God Shrine, located in the town of Katsuyama in Ishikawa Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Fujin, the god of wind and storms, known as the Eight-Horned God. The shrine's main hall dates back to 1873, but it was rebuilt on the site of an older shrine that originated during the Edo period. The shrine's architecture reflects its history, with a traditional Japanese-style gate (torii) surrounded by a beautiful garden. Visitors can experience the shrine's tranquility and observe the changing seasons through its carefully maintained landscaping.

Cultural notes

As one of Japan's 'Hachiman Shrines,' dedicated to Hachiman-gami, the Shinto god of war and patron of samurai, Eight-Horned God Shrine is also associated with the veneration of Hikitsukoi, a spirit believed to protect travelers. The shrine celebrates its patron deity during the annual Hikitsukoi Festival in June.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1873 after being damaged during the Boshin War.
