Located in the scenic city of Kusatsu, Hikataji Shrine is dedicated to the god of prosperity and good fortune, known as Inari. Dedicated in 1583, it has a long history dating back to the Sengoku period. Visitors can enjoy traditional Japanese architecture, including a wooden torii gate and a large honden building adorned with intricately carved wooden pillars.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Hikataji Shrine is famous for its 'sasagaki' tradition, where pilgrims tie ribbons with their wishes tied to a tree in the shrine's grounds. This unique tradition dates back to the Edo period and is said to have been started by a devotee of Inari.

It was rebuilt after the Great Fire of Kyoto in 1855
