Tsushima Island Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the primary deity, Kotoshogoto no Okami, as well as several other kami such as Otsuya-hime and Tsukiyomi. The shrine was originally built in the Heian period (794-1185 CE) on the island of Tsushima, which is now part of Tokushima Prefecture. As a result of tsunamis that hit the island multiple times over the centuries, the shrine has been rebuilt several times and its current main hall was completed in 1934.

Visitor tip
To make the most of your visit, try to time your trip with the annual Autumn Leaves Festival (Koyo), which takes place around late October. The surrounding park is beautifully lit during this period, creating stunning scenery for photos.
Cultural notes
The shrine is closely associated with the mythology of Tsushima Island, said to be inhabited by various kami including Otsuya-hime and Tsukiyomi. Visitors can also see traditional Shinto rituals performed during festivals, such as the Autumn Leaves Festival and the New Year's (Oshogatsu) festival.
Historical note
The shrine was destroyed by a tsunami in 1933 and rebuilt two years later.
