Cultural notes

Sugawara no Michizane is revered as the patron deity of scholars, students, and calligraphy. Plum blossoms are closely associated with Tenjin shrines, as Michizane was famous for his love of plum trees and composed poetry about them.

Historical note

Tenman shrines were established across Japan following the deification of Sugawara no Michizane in the 10th century. After his death in exile in 903 CE, he was enshrined as Tenjin, the kami of scholarship and learning, to appease his spirit and honor his scholarly achievements.
