Historical note

Tenman shrines were established to honor Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), a prominent court scholar and poet who was exiled and died in political disgrace. After his death, a series of natural disasters were attributed to his vengeful spirit, leading to his deification as Tenjin, the god of thunder and learning.
