Located in the picturesque city of Kanazawa, Akiba Shrine is a historic Shinto site dedicated to the worship of the local deity known as Yatagarasu, also referred to as Takamagahara. The shrine is situated on the banks of the Asano River and is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage. Visitors can admire the shrine's traditional architecture, which features a distinctive roof with wooden columns known as 'kakushi.', and explore the surrounding parkland, which offers scenic views of the surrounding city.

Visitor tip

To make the most of your visit, be sure to bring a traditional 'washcloth' (sudare) to wipe away sweat and dust while walking through the shrine grounds, a practice common among locals.

Cultural notes

Akiba Shrine is associated with the legend of Yatagarasu, a mythical bird said to have guided Emperor Jimmu to his throne. Visitors can also participate in traditional festivals such as the 'Autumn Leaves Festival' (, Akie Matsuri), which celebrates the changing colors of the leaves.

Established in 1580, during the Sengoku period, Akiba Shrine has been an important cultural center for over four centuries.
