White Mountain Shrine, dedicated to the deity of the mountains, is located in Akita Prefecture. The shrine is believed to have originated from a sacred site on Mount Iwaki, one of Japan's most prominent white-sand volcanoes. The current shrine building was constructed during the Edo period.

Visitor tip
Visitors can walk to the top of Mount Iwaki for a panoramic view, but be prepared for challenging terrain. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water as needed.
Cultural notes
The shrine is closely associated with the mountain deity Kamui Iwaki, who is revered for his strength and endurance. The shrine hosts an annual Shinshu Sanzan Pilgrimage in April, which includes stops at nearby shrines dedicated to other mountain deities.

The shrine was founded in the late Heian period, around 900 AD.
