Located in the city of Iwata, Shizuoka Prefecture, Sixtose-jinja Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity Hachiman, who is revered as the god of war and wisdom. Cultural notes
As a major Shinto pilgrimage site, Sixtose-jinja Shrine is believed to have been visited by Emperor Meiji himself in 1889. The shrine also hosts an annual Hachiman Matsuri festival in July, which features traditional music, dance, and offerings to the deity.
Historical note
The shrine was founded in 1617 by the daimyo (feudal lord) Hosokawa Tsuneoki, who sought to appease Hachiman after a devastating battle against the Takeda clan.
