Kodai-ji Temple, located in Hikone City, is believed to be the current shrine of Upper津 Shrine. The current temple's main hall dates back to 1692 and is one of its most notable features. The shrine was originally built in 718 AD as a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god Tsukimi-no-Mikoto, the goddess of the moon. Over time, the shrine has undergone significant transformations due to the influence of Buddhism.

Visitor tip
To appreciate the shrine's architecture, approach from the west entrance and head towards the main hall; it is particularly stunning during cherry blossom season.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its 'tsukimi' festival held annually on September 15th to celebrate the harvest moon. A full moon viewing ceremony takes place at night, followed by traditional dances and offerings to the god of the moon. The shrine also enshrines the god of fire, Inari Okami.
