Shinmei shrine

神明神社

Located in the prefecture of Ibaraki, Shinmei Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto god Inari Okami, patron deity of rice, fertility, and prosperity. Visitor tip

When visiting Shinmei Shrine, be sure to participate in the traditional 'tsukimi' viewing ceremony of the full moon, usually held on the 15th day of the ninth lunar month.

Cultural notes

In addition to its connection to Inari Okami, Shinmei Shrine is also associated with the mythological deer, a common motif in Japanese Shintoism. Visitors can see the shrine's famous 'shishi' stone lions standing guard at the entrance.

Historical note

Built during the Nara period, Shinmei Shrine was renovated in the Edo period (1603-1868 CE).
