Sanai Shrine is a small but historic Shinto shrine located in the city of Kakegawa, Shizuoka Prefecture. Dedicated to the kami of the same name, Sanai Shrine is known for its traditional architecture and scenic surroundings. The shrine complex features several buildings, including a main hall, a torii gate, and several smaller shrines dedicated to various regional deities.

Cultural notes

Sanai Shrine is known for its association with the legendary Japanese hero Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who was said to have visited the shrine during his battles against the forces of Emperor Antoku. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in May, which features traditional music and dance performances, as well as offerings to the kami.

Historical note

The shrine was founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), and its current main hall dates back to the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE).
