Saginomori Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the deity of rice and fertility, believed to have been enshrined here since ancient times. Visitors can see a large torii gate and traditional Japanese architecture, with many wooden buildings dating back to the 17th century. The shrine grounds also feature beautiful gardens and walking paths.

Visitor tip
For a more authentic experience, visit Saginomori Shrine during the spring festival, which takes place on May 4th. Traditional folk performances, such as Kabuki theater and traditional dance, can be seen here.
Cultural notes
Saginomori Shrine is associated with the mythology of the Japanese rice goddess, Himemiko. The shrine's torii gate is said to have been built by a local daimyo (feudal lord) in the Edo period, who wished to ensure a good harvest for his people.
Historical note
The shrine was renovated in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) and rebuilt during the Edo period (1603-1868).
